If you’ve done any research on hair loss, the term Minoxidil†† has more than likely come up. It is probably one of the most well-known names when it comes to topical treatments for hair loss.

But what is it and how long has it been around? Are there any side effects? Discover how HairClub can help you regrow your hair using Minoxidil and take a look at several hair transformations from clients using this effective, hair regrowth solution.

What is Minoxidil?

When Minoxidil was first used in the 1960s, it was an oral medication prescribed to treat high blood pressure. One interesting side effect that some male patients experienced was hair growth. This discovery led to the development of a topical form of the drug 20 years later to help men in the early stages of hair loss regrow hair.

In 1988, the FDA approved Minoxidil to treat androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness). A few years later, in 1992, it was approved by the FDA to treat hair loss in women.

Today, it is available over-the-counter in 2% and 5% strengths in either foam or solution form under various brand names for men, and 2% strength for women. When applied topically, it can help treat certain types of hair loss by stimulating hair growth and reducing further hair loss. In order to see results, it must be used consistently as directed. Most users will begin to see new hair growing within 2-4 months after starting treatment.

Minoxidil Side Effects

According to the Mayo Clinic, side effects of Minoxidil can include itchiness, skin rash, inflammation or soreness at the hair root, blurred vision, dizziness, and headache. While many of these are rare, it’s important to speak with your doctor before taking it and also discuss any side effects you may experience while using it.

For many of us, winter means freezing temperatures, whipping winds, heaps of snow and dry air. The lack of moisture in the winter air can wreak havoc on your hair, making it dry and more susceptible to damage and breakage. That’s why having a winter hair care routine is so important.

Taking the extra time to give your hair the special attention it needs can help keep your locks healthy, moisturized and vibrant – even if the temperature outside is in the single digits.

Winter Hair Care Routine Dos & DON’Ts

1. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.

Winter air is very drying, and when your hair is dry it’s more prone to breakage, which is why keeping your hair hydrated at all times is so important. This means always using a high-quality conditioner after shampooing your hair. On top of that, you can also apply a moisturizing, leave-in conditioner once you’re out of the shower. Pamper your hair (and yourself) with a weekly deep conditioning hair mask. If you’re in between washes, keep those thirsty ends happy with a hydrating hair oil.

2. Just keep trimming

Keep up with your regular trims during winter to prevent split ends. Your stylist can even offer a deep conditioning treatment to help give your hair added moisture and softness.

3. Cover up

It makes sense to wear a coat, boots and scarf when heading outside, but don’t forget to cover your head too. Not only will wearing a hat keep you warmer, it will also help keep your hair in place, reduce tangles, and protect your tresses from the harsh winter air, blustery winds and falling snow. For further protection, use a silk- or satin-lined hat under your headgear to reduce static and further damage.

4. Air dry for the win

As tempting as it may be to bring out the hair dryer after you’ve washed your hair, it’s best to allow your hair to air dry, unless you’re going out (see dont #2). The heat can make hair even dryer and cause serious damage if used on a regular basis. Cut down on the use of heated appliances, or use the lowest heat setting possible.

5. Eat right and hydrate (on the inside)

A winter hair care routine wouldn’t be complete if you didn’t nourish your body. A healthy diet full of nutritious food can do wonders for – inside and out. Be sure to eat a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean meats. Opt for water instead of sugary drinks to help keep you glowing and hydrated from the inside out.

Winter Hair Care Routine You Really Need

6. Don’t overwash

You may think that washing your hair every day is a good idea, but it’s not. Overwashing can lead to dryness and dullness. Shampooing every day can cause an itchy scalp, split ends, breakage and also strip the natural oils that help keep hair healthy and moisturized. Depending on your hair type, washing 2-3 times a week should be plenty. On the flip side, not washing your hair enough can lead to an overproduction of oils and odor.

7. Avoid hot water

As soothing as a hot shower may be when it’s really cold, aim for a lukewarm shower instead. Very hot water can dry hair (and skin) even more by stripping it of its natural oils. This can lead to an irritated scalp and flakiness, and no one needs that.

8. Don’t go outside with wet hair

Wet hair is very vulnerable, and going outside into the cold winter air after you’ve washed it is an absolute don’t. Extremely low temperatures can cause wet hair to freeze and break. If you must go out, be sure to dry your hair on the lowest heat setting possible.

A winter hair care routine is crucial if you want to keep your hair healthy and looking its best. Some of these tips may already be a part of your beauty regimen, and if they’re not, try incorporating a few here and there. A few minutes each day can make a big difference. Your hair will thank you!

Abby Jensen is a happy, confident 24-year-old from Cleveland, Ohio. You couldn’t tell from looking at her, but Abby has been a HairClub for Kids client since she was just four years old.

A Medical Discovery Affects Hair Growth

Abby was born eight weeks prematurely. According to her mom, Chris, it was a difficult pregnancy. As Abby developed and became stronger, doctors realized she had been born with an amniotic band wrapped around her head. It was discovered a few months after she was born, because her full head of dark hair made it difficult to see.

Abby’s family ended up working with doctors at the Children’s Hospital in Akron, where they treated her condition as a burn. Eventually a scab formed and once it healed, Abby was never able to grow her own hair. Despite being a premature baby, Abby was a healthy child full of energy and joy.

Facing Challenges Through Childhood

As a child, Abby would usually wear a hat whenever she would go out in public. Chris says that even on Halloween, they would choose a costume that entailed wearing a wig in order to cover Abby’s head. Unfortunately, Chris says that they would get a lot of stares, and her daughter was treated differently than the other children because of the way she looked.

Summers were especially difficult. Going to the pool was always a challenge. Chris said that some moms wouldn’t let their kids play with Abby, or even let her play with their toys. She could hear them whispering amongst each other and moving their kids away from Abby.

As a mother, it broke Chris’ heart.

When Abby turned four and was about to start school, Chris, a teacher herself, knew they had to do something. They turned to a wig company, however, as an active and playful four-year-old child, a wig wasn’t going to work.

Persistence Leads to HairClub

Chris then turned to the internet to do some research, and one day she came across HairClub. When they went into their local center, they met with a few stylists, including Laurie, who made them feel comfortable and right at home.

Abby was fitted for a hair replacement solution and from that point forward, her life was forever changed. “One of the best things we’ve done is come to HairClub,” she says.

Even when she had her hair, kids were still mean at school. Abby remembers being made fun of because sometimes her hair was blond and other times it was brown, depending on the style she chose. She eventually accepted that some kids were just going to keep teasing her, but it didn’t stop her from being herself and living her life to the fullest.

Her hair gave her confidence and allowed her to do things other kids her age did, like swim, style it in different ways, and so much more. HairClub for Kids allowed Abby to feel like a ‘normal kid’ and she knows that without them, her life would’ve been very different.

To this day, Abby still gets her hair done with Laurie every month. “She knows everything about me. I know everything about her,” says Abby. “HairClub has been phenomenal.” She has confidence and can do anything and everything with her hair system. She can swim, go to her favorite indoor cycling studio, sweat, shower, you name it.

Abby’s advice to parents who have children affected by hair loss? “Be persistent and ask questions,” she says. “Don’t take no for an answer.” Abby says had her and her mom taken no for an answer, she’d still be wearing a hat at 24, and hiding from the world.

Depression can have a significant effect on the body. That includes the scalp and hair. There is a link between depression and hair loss, an issue that affects men, women and young people.

A mood disorder characterized by feelings of sadness, worthlessness, or hopelessness, the National Institute of Mental Health that more than 21 million adults in the United States had at least one major depressive episode. Hair loss and stress are also related, with three types of hair loss associated with high stress according to the Mayo Clinic. They include telogen effluvium which pushes hair follicles into the resting phase, trichotillomania causing sufferers to pull out their hair from the scalp and alopecia areata when the body’s immune system attacks hair follicles.

What is the CONNECTION between hair loss and depression?

Depression and hair loss share commonalities. Both hair loss and depression can create loss of interest or taking pleasure in hobbies and activities. As one HairClub Member shared in her testimonial, before finding HairClub, she stopped going to the beach entirely, which was her stress reliever and favorite pastime. Her advanced hair loss made her too self-conscious. Similarly, depression can cause people to stop caring about things that once brought them joy.

“Hair loss can absolutely be a trigger for the development of depression or the worsening of any pre-existing depression in some individuals,” said Dr. Angie Phipps, HairClub medical advisor and board-certified hair restoration surgeon with Bosley, the surgical hair restoration partner within the HairClub family. “People can become so self-conscious about their hair loss and thinning hair that it can progress from just being something that bothers someone to a very real catalyst for clinical depression.”

The link between depression and hair loss can be physical and psychological. Depression can sometimes lead to hair loss and hair loss can trigger depression. Even with professional treatment for depression symptoms, hair loss due to underlying issues related to the condition can occur.

“Hair loss isn’t something to just brush off and tell individuals that they shouldn’t worry about it, that it’s just genetics and bad luck – hair loss and the mental health toll it can take on some individuals needs to be recognized, openly discussed, and talked about with real interest and validation,” said Dr. Phipps. “Everyone, including health care providers need to be cognizant of and take seriously the issue of depression and hair loss.”

HairClub is your partner in all hair loss solutions, regardless of the cause.

You do not have to face hair loss alone. HairClub is a community of shared experiences and supportive Hair Health Experts, specially trained in all types of hair loss. Using HairClub’s advanced imaging technology called TrichoView, they can identify every stage of hair loss and determine the best solution for each HairClub Member.

Hair loss associated with depression can manifest itself in many forms, including telogen effluvium or alopecia areata. Telogen effluvium causes hairs to shift into a resting phase before eventually falling out later. Alopecia areata, an autoimmune disorder, causes patches of acute hair loss. HairClub has a solution for every stage of hair loss, from early regrowth options to advanced hair replacement systems.

Fuller, thicker hair begins with a healthy scalp. For early hair loss, HairClub’s EXT Extreme Hair Therapy can help Members regrow hair. EXT’s powerful combination of in-center and at home products are proven to assist in hair regrowth. EXT kicks hair and scalp health into overdrive, preparing the ideal environment for hair to grow. EXT includes FDA-approved laser hair therapy, a solution containing minoxidil, scalp stimulation, and products, all of which help to regrow hair.

In cases of advanced hair loss where hair regrowth is no longer an option or Members want instantly thicker hair, HairClub’s Xtrands+ solution is transformational. In testimonials, HairClub Members rave about getting hair they love with Xtrands+ and feeling confident about their hair again. Xtrands+ is HairClub’s premium, full-coverage hair system.

Take action. Don't wait.

Decisive action is the enemy of hair loss. And no two cases of depression and hair loss are the same. Both interfere with daily activities cause stress, which can worsen hair loss. Don’t wait to get help with hair loss.

 • Book a free consultation at HairClub at the first sign of hair loss to get help immediately. Hair loss is progressive, which means it worsens over time. The post Receding Hairline is Male Pattern Baldness appeared first on HairClub.

]]>

Among the most obvious signs of male pattern baldness, a receding hairline can be a source of insecurity for many men. A receding hairline is in fact male pattern hair loss, around the hairline where the pattern begins. Not all male hair loss is local to that area of the hair, though it represents a majority of hair loss cases in men.

At HairClub, our Hair Health Experts receive special training to understand each type of hair loss and provide a custom solution to match it, including male pattern baldness.

No one knows better than Tiffany Dew of the Raleigh HairClub Center about the life-changing power of Xtrands+, a full coverage, hair replacement system from HairClub. Dew is a recognized expert in HairClub’s Xtrands+ non-surgical hair replacement solution. After showcasing her knowledge and experience on the TLC hit show ‘Bad Hair Day’, Dew’s Xtrands+ skills were in high demand. On the show and every day at HairClub, Dew custom matches Xtrands+ for Members to create a seamless transition between the hair system and a Member’s own naturally growing hair.

“In the early stages of a receding hairline, we can try EXT Extreme Hair Therapy first, but when a Member has advanced hair loss and hair regrowth isn’t possible, HairClub offers Xtrands+, which has a skin-like base with hair attached to it,” says Dew. “Xtrands+ mimics your own hair, with a part and movement, just like your natural growing hair.”

Xtrands+ bonds to the scalp with a medical-grade adhesive, so Xtrands+ Members can resume their favorite activities, including swimming and hair care maintenance, like shampooing and styling. A HairClub Member may want Xtrands+ just across the hairline, or broader coverage for fuller, thicker hair. Xtrands+is a fully customized hair replacement system for that reason.

“Each Xtrands+ system is custom ordered, and we match the skin tone, color and texture so no one can see where HairClub’s Xtrands+ system stops and natural growing hair begins,” says Dew. “Even when we’re working with a challenging horseshoe pattern, we create a template so the Xtrands+ hair system is in the shape of the area to be filled in.”

Some individuals experience their hair loss in the crown, middle or diffusely over the entire top of the head. Xtrands+ solution is for use anywhere on the head to help with hair loss.

While it is possible to regrow hair in the very early stages, much depends on the type of hair loss someone experiences and how far along in that journey they may be. The most common cause of a receding hairline is the aforementioned male pattern baldness, also known as androgenetic alopecia. This type of hair loss is caused by genetics. Another component is when receptors in the scalp block important nutrients from entering the follicles, weakening them over time until they stop producing full strands of hair.

Expect receding hairlines to worsen with stress, poor nutrition, age, certain medications and medical conditions, such as COVID 19. Stress has long been linked to hair loss due to the hormone connection. Poor nutrition can contribute due to weakened follicles from a lack of essential vitamins and minerals necessary for healthy hair growth. Age has its own role to play as our bodies naturally produce fewer hormones, like testosterone. Certain medications and conditions can also disrupt hormone levels in the body, leading to a receding hairline.

Each person’s receding hairline is unique. Meet with a HairClub Hair Health Expert to take your first step toward a hair system like Xtrands+ for full coverage, or EXT Extreme Hair Therapy for regrowth for early hair loss. Schedule a free consultation at one of 121 HairClub Centers near you.

Can You Prevent Hair Loss? https://www.hairclub.com/blog/can-you-prevent-hair-loss/ https://www.hairclub.com/blog/can-you-prevent-hair-loss/#respond Mon, 23 Oct 2023 05:18:18 +0000 https://www.hairclub.com/?p=9376 Early adopters want to know if there is a way to prevent hair loss and preserve the hair they have....

The post Can You Prevent Hair Loss? appeared first on HairClub.

]]>
Early adopters want to know if there is a way to prevent hair loss and preserve the hair they have. And does HairClub offer such a solution?

“You absolutely can help slow hair loss,” says HairClub medical advisor Dr. Angie Phipps, a board-certified hair restoration surgeon and star of TLC’s hit television show ‘Bad Hair Day’ featuring real people desperately seeking help with hair loss.

Dr. Phipps recommends HairClub’s EXT Extreme Hair Therapy® to both slow hair loss and help regrow hair during the early stages of hair loss.

“EXT works to possibly help regrow hair and prevent further loss by stimulating the hair follicle cells to become stronger – if the cells of the hair follicles are stronger, they live longer and have the potential to produce thicker diameter hair shafts, and thicker hair shafts cover more scalp than thinner hair shafts,” says Dr. Phipps, who practices with Bosley, the surgical hair restoration partner within the HairClub family in Raleigh, NC.

Most helpful in the early stages of hair loss or before hair loss occurs, EXT is a powerful bundle of premium hair regrowth products, in-center and at-home solutions. EXT includes FDA-cleared low-level laser light therapy and scalp massage to stimulate blood flow to the scalp,

An EXT consultation at HairClub begins with TrichoView imaging, which provides a magnified view of hair loss versus what the naked eye sees in the mirror every day. This painless process enables HairClub Hair Health Experts to observe your stages and types of hair loss, projecting the magnification onto a screen for you to see.

If you are a candidate for EXT, your HairClub’s Hair Health Expert will prepare a tailored EXT solution for you, including scalp cleanser, elixir, laser hair therapy and scalp massager to stimulate blood flow to the scalp. Hair regrowth depends on a healthy scalp and each of these are important components of the EXT solution.

HairClub Members who chose EXT also receive a six-step system to use at home, including shampoo, cleanser, conditioner, supplements, scalp massager and rejuvenating product containing Minoxidil, the FDA-approved topical hair regrowth ingredient clinically proven to regrow hair.

In follow-up visits every month, Hair Health Experts digitally track hair regrowth progress in real time using TrichoView.

“The main objective with medical therapy in hair loss is to stimulate and stabilize any hair follicle cells that may be weakened,” said Dr. Phipps.

Hair loss happens over time, and so does hair regrowth. It takes time to try and re-stimulate hair growth and see visible improvement, but there is also the component of stabilizing the stage and rate of hair loss, so that it doesn’t continue to worsen.

“I tell my patients that without surgical intervention, if they only do medical therapy like HairClub’s EXT Extreme Hair Therapy, and I see you after one year of treatment and you don’t notice any visible improvement, that the therapy is still working,” she says. “Because the loss has stabilized and hasn’t gotten progressively worse or thinner – so keep doing the medical therapy – it is working.”

EXT is also effective to help prevent hair loss or delay it.

“Therapies in EXT, such as topical minoxidil, low level light therapy, and stimulatory hair care products like the scalp massager, can help prevent the possibility of developing hair thinning given a family history of hair loss,” says Dr. Phipps. “The minoxidil topical and low-level light therapy in HairClub’s EXT solution can begin at the age of 18, maybe slightly earlier with parental consent.”

Daily maintenance is important to prevent hair loss from environmental factors like traction alopecia. Traction alopecia is a leading cause of premature hair loss, which more commonly occurs in girls due to excess styling and pulling.

Both COVID-19 and stress are top causes of thinning hair. The combination of these two conditions is especially hard on hair health. Once a surprising side effect of COVID-19, hair loss is now a well-known condition related to the virus.

As researchers continue to study the long-term effects of COVID, doctors have seen an uptick in shock hair loss post-COVID, especially in cases with a fever or other complications which can cause extensive hair shedding to occur. Studies conclude that the infection is now a frequent and common cause of acute telogen effluvium (ATE), a type of non-scarring hair loss.

COVID-19 and Hair Loss

In a study published in the Irish Journal of Medical Science, patients who were evaluated with a diagnosis of ATE also had a confirmed diagnosis of prior SARS-CoV-2 infection. All patients experienced excessive hair loss within two-three months, post-infection.

There is good news, however. COVID-related hair loss is actually hair shedding, as defined by the American Academy of Dermatology Association, which is typically a temporary issue. Acute hair loss can be a normal side effect after certain illnesses and fever, which is a common symptom of COVID-19. In a matter of 8-12 weeks after a fever-related illness, many patients will notice what appears to be hair loss, but it is actually shedding. The shedding of extra hairs is triggered when illness or high fever forces more hairs into the shedding phase of the hair growth lifecycle at the same time. This is known as telogen effluvium

It can be alarming to see handfuls of hair in the shower or during brushing. And while regrowth should eventually return, it can take six to nine months or longer for hair to return to pre-Covid fullness.

Stress and Hair Loss

A secondary vicious cycle can occur when dealing with COVID-related hair loss and mental health. Stress can cause hair loss. Hair loss is stressful

HairClub medical advisor Dr. Angie Phipps is a board-certified hair restoration surgeon and star of TLC’s hit television show ‘Bad Hair Day’ featuring real people desperately seeking help with hair loss. Hair loss is also “an extremely significant mental and emotional health issue,” said Dr. Phipps, who is based in Raleigh, NC, and practices with Bosley, the surgical hair restoration partner within the HairClub family.

“Hair loss can absolutely be life threatening if it takes too big of a toll on a person’s mental health and healthcare providers need to take it seriously,”said Dr. Phipps in a story about mental health and hair loss in a story that explores the connection between mental health and hair loss. “It isn’t usually until people feel that they have exhausted all other options before they seek surgical hair restoration.”

Researchers have identified alopecia as a distressing traumatic event in anxiety and depression. Women who experience high levels of stress are 11 times more likely to experience hair loss than those who did not report high-stress levels, as reported in a study by dermatology clinical fellows and doctors affiliated with the NHS Barts Health Royal London Hospital. And as many as half of women will experience noticeable hair loss, according to Cleveland Clinic researchers.

Easy there, partner. Stop being so hard on your hair. Teasing, pulling too tightly, or otherwise being hard on your hair has consequences. Damaging hairstyling practices cause a condition called traction alopecia.

What is traction alopecia?

Excessive styling, such as sewing in weaves, overly taught extensions, braiding, pulling and relaxing hair, especially on the crown or the top of the head, can worsen traction alopecia.

Tight hairstyles pull the hair strand connected to the hair follicle and reduce circulation, causing hair to fall out. Traction alopecia, according to a study in the medical journal Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology, affects one-third of women of African descent. The BBC also reported on a South African model who suffered more than 50 percent hair loss at age 31, due to excessive styling.

A Boston University Slone Epidemiology Center study of almost 6,000 women of African descent found that nearly 48 percent of respondents suffered hair loss on the crown or the top of the head, mostly caused by traction alopecia.

Do I have traction alopecia?

It’s normal to shed 100-150 hairs every single day, but many conditions can affect one or all of these growth cycles, including stress, medications, underlying medical conditions and genetics. When you damage the scalp or hair, that adds another component of hair loss.

It’s actually healthy to wash and style your hair. The scalp responds to stimulation, such as when a stylist runs their fingers through your hair during washing and conditioning, applying leave-in products, brushing and styling hair. This increases blood flow to the scalp, which improves circulation. The process creates a fertile environment for hair to grow.

The opposite happens when you apply too much heat to the hair for too long or burn the scalp. Breakage and damage to the hair follicle can occur, leading to alopecia. Repeating these harmful practices over time can result in advanced hair loss.

Regrow Your Hair After Traction Alopecia

There is good news. The experts at HairClub can help reverse traction alopecia and regrow hair in the early stages of hair loss. Our Hair Health Experts can also teach you how to avoid hair loss due to traction alopecia, stopping it before it happens.
